Palliative Care

Palliative care is the type of care provided when an incurable illness or condition can’t be treated without causing discomfort or suffering. The emphasis of palliative care is keeping the person comfortable.

West Rest Haven provides palliative care in place of hospice services and does not contract with a hospice agency, as this would be a duplication of services that can be provided by our own facility. We believe it’s important to respect end-of-life care decisions from residents and families, as well as give residents the opportunity to be near family members and caregivers who know them. Our main goal is to keep the resident comfortable and provide any treatment that can be done at the nursing home so family and caregivers can stay connected to the resident.

Palliative care is end-of-life care, which means that certain health complications such as weight loss and dehydration are more common as the person stops or slows down eating and drinking. Sores can develop as the person gets thinner and loses fat. We may ask to insert a catheter if the resident is in pain during incontinent care or if a sore can’t heal because it’s staying wet from urine.

Constipation may become an issue as more pain medication is required, especially if the resident is not eating or drinking very much. Strong pain medications or narcotics, anti-anxiety medication or nerve pills, and hypnotics or sleeping pills may be prescribed to preserve the resident’s quality of life.

West Rest Haven is sensitive to our residents’ and families’ spiritual needs. Our nursing staff and/or a social worker will help the resident, as well as their family or caregivers, be aware of our ability and willingness to accommodate any spiritual preferences. We can refer you to pastors, priests, or other spiritual advisors as requested. Our chapel is also available 24/7 for residents and their families.

Dining Services

West Rest Haven residents are served three delicious and nutritious meals every day. We plan our menus to meet the nutritional needs of the residents in accordance with physicians’ orders. We are also happy to serve refreshments and bedtime snacks routinely and at the request of the resident. Our highly qualified food service supervisor oversees dietary services and receives regularly scheduled consultation from a qualified dietitian. 

Housekeeping Services

Maintaining a clean living environment is imperative to maintaining a high quality of life. West Rest Haven provides excellent housekeeping services in the common areas and in each resident’s room.

Laundry Services

Basic laundry services are included in the resident’s daily charge.
